One of the challenges in "friend-raising" for the Hoop Club are some of the myths of athletic support among Georgetown fans. Here are a few.

MYTH: "Georgetown doesn't need my money. Everyone knows basketball pays the bills for all the teams."

FACT: Revenues from men's basketball pay less than 20 percent of the costs to run the GU athletic department.

MYTH: "With all the money Georgetown is raising in that capital campaign, money for basketball should not be a problem."

FACT: The capital campaign is raising funds for specific projects across the university. And not one of the current campaign projects is for men's basketball.

MYTH: "The NCAA provides millions to Georgetown basketball."

FACT: NCAA revenue sharing is based on a complex formula that takes into account a team's NCAA participation in the tournament over a five year period. Over those five years, Georgetown competed in only three NCAA games (all in 2001) and the formula gives GU no credit for the years 1999, 2000, and 2003 when it was selected for the NIT.

By contrast, Duke will receive shares for playing in 22 NCAA games over a five year period.

MYTH: "Ticket revenue from MCI Center should be more than enough for the budget."

FACT: A full house at MCI is a good thing for Georgetown basketball, but it's not a regular occurrence and the cost to rent MCI is not cheap. Average MCI attendance is only 38 percent of capacity and does not provide a steady stream of excess revenues.

MYTH: "There's no guarantee a gift to basketball actually gets there."

FACT:A gift to the Hoya Hoop Club is directed to support men's basketball. If you designate basketball on your gift, it will get there.

MYTH: "The only gifts Georgetown cares about are the big ones."

FACT: Every gift counts--every one! A $25 gift is important not only for Georgetown basketball, but for your class fund totals and Annual Fund Giving. If a $25 gift is important to you, it's important to Georgetown, too.

MYTH: "I could never afford a big gift."

FACT: Hoyas Unlimited's "G" club offers the opportunity for monthly charges to your credit card statement, making it easy to make a larger gift with smaller payments. Think of it: a $20.83 charge to your credit card each month would translate into a $250 gift to Georgetown Basketball. That's less than most cellular phone bills! And, if your employer participates in a matching gift program, you accumulated gift could double or triple.

MYTH: "I could make a nice gift, but it's the older alumni that get the best tickets."

FACT: Tickets are not assigned on age. While consecutive years of giving may be one factor, the size of the gift is an important determinant in assessing annual ticket priority.

And here's one statement that's no myth:

FACT: "The only way for Georgetown to continue to grow its program is with the support of its fans and alumni constituents. "

Don't delay--join today.
