Preview

The 2014-15 season was a good one for Maryland Eastern-Shore, with its first winning season in 21 years. The 2015-16 season has been a challenge to date, as the Hawks take a 1-4 record into Tuesday's game at Georgetown. Judging by its recent games, 1-5 seems likely.

The Hawks enter Tuesday's game ranked 325th among 350 NCAA Division I teams in scoring offense, 327th in turnovers, and 330th in turnover margin. Its best player, the returning MEAC rookie of the year, was benched after two games and the team is finding it hard to build offensive momentum. A senior-led effort led the hawks to its first win of the season last weekend versus St. Francis (PA), but they will need much more from its backcourt to stay close to the Hoyas.

Poor shooting has been a problem for UMES this year, and one which 6-4 senior Devin Martin needs to correct. Martin is the leading scorer on the roster to date and its best backcourt shooter, but the loss of MEAC Rookie Of the Year Ryan Andino from the starting lineup has put added pressure on Martin to carry the load. 6-0 freshman Ahmed Frost has only four baskets in five games, and while forwards Bakari Copeland (11.6 ppg) and Dominique Elliott ( 11.6 ppg) average in double, figures, the Hawks are averaging just 63 points a game but giving up nearly 80. its three point shooting of 29 percent and a woeful assist to turnover ratio of 0.52 give its opponents plenty of second chances to succeed.

Andino represents a wild card for the Hawks. The 6-2 sophomore has played in all five games this season but his touch isn't there, shooting just 28 percent from the field and 5 for 21 from three point range. With a little more patience, Andino could be a solid outside shooter for the hawks, freeing up Martin to drive inside. Georgetown remains a taller and quicker opponent than UMES has faced to date, which could pose problems if Georgetown gets on an early run.

Tuesday's game should not see the hoyas looking ahead to its Saturday game with Syracuse, though the staff will want to see more consistent guard play from D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, who is averaging 28 percent in the first half over five games, averaging just 4.7 points. The return of sophomore Tre Campbell from illness and a second game from paul White will allow further opportunities to prepare the team for Saturday's game.

Keys To The Game:

Force Turnovers: The Hawks average nearly 17 turnovers a game, and lack the offensive firepower to overcome sloppy play.

Jessie Govan: Govan figures to get a lot of time Saturday versus the orangemen, so a good effort in this game will provide a confidence boost.

Free Throws: UMES figures to do better at the line than Bryant, which missed 10 of its 15 attempts Saturday. Keeping the Hawks off the line will prove helpful.
