Given their national success, it is no surprise that Connecticut and Syracuse maintain their ranking as the top two-ranked programs in this study. UConn ranks in the top three in all but one category, with Syracuse similarly ranked except for its recent struggles in the Big East tournament ,where it has not won the title in 11 years. The leaders of Conference USA, Cincinnati and Louisville, fall right in behind the Huskies, Orange and Notre Dame.

Strong 2002-03 seasons elevated Pitt and Marquette into the next level of statistics. Villanova has gained from a competitive RPI in recent years, but the same cannot be said for Georgetown, where the Hoyas have posted three seasons of double-digit conference losses in the past last five years. With 50% of the scoring based on conference wins, RPI, and psot season activity, the recent setbacks are key to Georgetown's mid-level rank. Joining Villanova and Georgetown in the middle is Seton Hall, which has also struggled to reach the top half of many conference categories.

Providence, Rutgers, and West Virginia finished in the same approximate rankings they did in the 2002 survey, with DePaul finishing ahead of South Florida for the C-USA additions.

The numbers are only that--statistics--but they underscore the depth and breadth of the new conference members. In addition to their in-season and post-season success, each of the Conference USA schools have, or are adding, new practice facilities that many current Big East schools do not have, and each of the new schools can now sell the Big East to its next two recruiting classes.

There's some real work ahead for teams like Georgetown to compete in what promises to be the nation's most closely watched basketball conference.

Methodology

The study involved three main areas: sourcing, category weighting, and point totals.

  1. Sourcing. The following sources were used for each category:
    • Conference wins: Big East and Conference USA sites
    • RPI index: Team Ratings.com RPI, 1999 through 2003
    • AP Polls: NCAA Basketball Record Book, 2003, with 2002-03 data at conference web sites.
    • Post-season activity: Conference web sites
    • Home attendance: NCAA web site
    • TV appearances: USA Today
    • Top 100 recruits: RSCI Index
    • NBA alumni: USA Today
    • Big East men's basketball revenues: U.S. Department of Education
  2. Category weighting. The following weights were assigned to each category for the purposes of an overall score:
    • Conference wins: 20%
    • RPI index: 15%
    • AP polls: 15%
    • Post-season activity: 15%
    • Big East tournament wins: 5%
    • Home attendance: 10%
    • TV appearances: 7.5%
    • Top 100 recruits: 7.5%
    • NBA alumni: 2.5%
    • Big East men's basketball revenues: 2.5%
    • Total: 100%

Point totals. Schools were assigned a ranking of 1 to 16 in each category. 1st place received 16 points, 2nd place 15, etc. Ties received the higher of the places; i.e, two teams tied for 3rd were each listed as 3rd. These rankings were multiplied by the category weight and added across the columns.

N.B.: Mistakes do happen in these kind of surveys, so if you see something that could change the final points total, send an e-mail.
