Game Trivia

This is the fifth straight road game for Coastal. Its home opener is against Navy on Dec. 7.

In the 27 year history of Coastal basketball, this is the second time the team has returned all five starters from the previous year.

Coastal's mascot, the Chanticleer, is noted by CCU's web site as the "crafty quick-thinking rooster" from the Canterbury Tales; it's also a nod to the state's more famous fowl, the South Carolina Gamecocks. According to the school's media guide, the preferred pronunciation of the nickname is "shont-i-cleer", as opposed to "chant-a-clear".

Preview

With four road games in eight days, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers could use a rest. But it won't be on Monday.

Following an uneven and, to some, a lackluster effort against Towson, the Georgetown Hoyas look to tune up on Coastal before meeting South Carolina later this week.

Coastal returns five starters from an 8-20 team in 2001-02, but the Chants have struggled to hold the ball, averaging almost 20 turnovers a game. Torrey Butler, who was out all of last season, leads the team in scoring but has not seen action against the Hoyas since his freshman year. Coastal is small (only two players above 6-8) but has shot well against Georgetown in past games.

The Hoyas have done well in stopping their opponents' leading scorers, and the focus will be on containing Coastal's Torrey Butler. The Hoyas' inside game was not dominant against Towson and the game may be an opportunity to get Mike Sweetney and Wesley Wilson up to game form before South Carolina. Fans may also see a number of free throws in the game (Coastal is averaging over 22 fouls a game) to the Hoyas need to do better on free throw shooting than was shown against Towson.

The first big test of the season comes against South carolina, so Monday's game offers a good opportunity to test out all the scenarios necessary before going to battle Thursday.
